Article Types
The following types of articles by subject are accepted by the North American Otter Chronicles:
- Conservation Initiatives in the Wild and Zoos, Aquariums & Wildlife Centers: Canada, United States, & Mexico
- Proposed & Ongoing Research Initiatives
- Population Status, Surveys, and Tracking
- Diet Analyses and Feeding
- Behavior: General & Specific Behavior & Ethograms, & Behavior Enrichment
- Rehabilitation & Reintroduction & Trapping
- News from North American Zoos, Aquariums, & Wildlife Centers in Canada, Mexico, & United States
- Captive Management Initiatives
- Otter Diseases and Veterinary Medicine

- Otter Conferences & Symposia Alerts
Article Format
All articles submitted for publication in the North American Otter Chronicles must comply with the following format:
- Orientation is “Portrait”
- All text must be submitted as a Microsoft Office “Word” document (not a pdf) to allow for editing and formatting to fit the Chronicles layout
- Text is be presented in full justification
- Text must be in 11 point Times New Roman type
- Margins are to be one inch all around
- Author Content:
- Full last name followed by full first name. Full middle name(s) or initial(s) may be included following the authors’ first name.
- Name and address of university and/or organization of affiliation may be added below the author section with a superscript number referencing the author(s) above
- Titles: Accepted as submitted
- Photos and Figures and their captions may be included wherever determined by the author(s). The author(s) needs to ensure photos and figures, in the article they submit, can be cut, re-sized, and re-pasted elsewhere in their article so as to fit the formatting of the Chronicles layout.
- Special Notes:
- Referencing a citation in the text body (all in parentheses):
- Last name first and initials for one to two authors and
- for three or more authors add et al for these authors [period] and the publication year.
- Literature Cited or References section may be included should the author(s) consider this imperative. The citation format is as follows:
- Full last name followed by full first name, Full middle name(s) or initial(s) [period]
- followed by the year in parentheses and bold type [period].
- Title of the article with first word and all pronouns capitalized and full scientific name(s) italicized and in parentheses
- Full name of periodical in italics [comma]: and the
- Volume, issue, and page number(s), e.g. 3(4): 26-31.
- Many of the more scientifically-oriented articles for the Chronicles are not necessarily intended for duplicate publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals. For publication in the Chronicles articles may be an overview, synopsis, or abstract of an article in or awaiting publication in a peer-reviewed scientific journal.
- It is recommended that potential authors for the Chronicles refer to the issues of The River Otter Journal to evaluate how to construct their scientifically-oriented and other articles. Access to the journal issues is available via the IUCN Otter Specialist Group website at the following location: riverotterjournal.org.

After acceptance, editing, and composition, your article will be part of the next issue of the North American Otter Chronicles publication. In addition, your article will be submited to the IUCN/SSC Bulletin website manager for upload to the website as a ‘latest Article’
