The Neotropical Otter presents the broadest distribution among New World otters, in a wide range of habitats from sea level up to 3,885 m a.s.l.
They are found in northern Mexico habitats adjacent to and possibly sharing with its northern counterpart the North American river otter (Lontra canadensis) and in most of Mexico south through Central and South America and on the island of Trinidad
They do have particularly long tails!
Between the 1950s and the 1970s, an extremely high hunting rate nearly drove this little mustelid to extinction when over 30,000 otters were killed every year for their pelts. Now, they are protected in every country in which they occur.
